Record Number of Snow Geese "Flock" to Squaw Creek
Midwest Region, March 10, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge has been a traditional stop-over for snow geese during the fall migration while smaller numbers stop in the spring.  A record number of snow geese concentrated at Squaw Creek in November 1986 when approximately 600,000 were estimated while the average has been between 300,000 to 350,000.  Since the initiation of the Spring Conservation Season, the number of snow geese concentrating on the refuge has increased nearly every year.  This spring, snow geese began to arrive in late February and the population increased exponentially with 300,000 March 3 to 1.4 million March 10.  In addition, more than 35,000 white-fronted geese and 7,000 Canada geese were present.  This also included 36,000 ducks and 77 trumpeter swans.
