Partnership in Northwest Wisconsion Receives $1 Million NAWCA Grant
Midwest Region, March 12, 2008
Print Friendly Version
On March 12, 2008, the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission approved a $1 million grant under the North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA) for a project called Wisconsin Northwest Pothole Habitat Initiative - Phase V.  NAWCA requires, at a minimum, the grant amount be matched with non-federal contributions.  This is typically accomplished by partners from state, tribal and other non-government organizations.  In this case, non-federal partners contributed $7,368,564 and an additional $2,227,209 was contributed by federal partners.

This effort will focus on nine counties in northwest Wisconsin and will protect, restore, and enhance 1,108 acres of wetland and 2,740 acres of upland habitat.  The grantee is Ducks Unlimited and the other partners are the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Pheasants Forever, Inc., Polk County Land and Water Resources, West Wisconsin Land Trust, Star Prairie Fish and Game Association, Standing Cedars Community Land Conservancy, Mark Johnson (private landowner) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

This project and the partnership are part of the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture. The acquisition and restoration of wildlife habitats associated with this proposal will advance the goals identified in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture 2007 Implementation Plan, Partners in Flight, North American Waterbird Conservation Plan and the Wisconsin State Wildlife Action Plan.  A few of the priority migratory birds that will benefit from this effort are the mallard, lesser scaup, American bittern, Henslow’s sparrow and the black tern.
