San Bernardino NWR is becoming the area’s model for burrowing owl relocation.  For the second time in the last two months the refuge played host to a local land manager that is interested in providing habitat for the purpose of burrowing owl relocation.  Wild at Heart, an Arizona raptor relocation organization, is responsible for the relocation of burrowing owls in Arizona and relocated thirteen adult owls to the refuge headquarters site last year.  Since that time the refuge has had several individuals inquire about what is involved in this type of project.  The most recent inquiry came from Cochise County Rancher Dennis Maroney, owner of the 47 Ranch.  Mr. Maroney had inquired about this project last year and finally found time to visit our site.  The refuge currently has 100 burrows set up for the owls, with 68 of those available for more owls to be relocated.
