Ron Price 1-17-2008 Bottomland Hardwood Restoration

A contract planter from Mississippi planted approximately 66,000 bare-root hardwood seedlings on 207 acres of the 320-acre Humphrey tract.  These seedlings were planted with a mechanical planter over a two-week period.  The seedlings were purchased by American Electric Power as part of a carbon sequestration project.  The idea behind carbon sequestration is that hardwood forests sequester tons of atmospheric carbon over the life of a typical forest.  An additional benefit to the refuge is the restoration of bottomland hardwood forest habitat.  This project was a joint effort between the Service, Environmental Synergy, The Conservation Fund, and American Electric Power.
