KENAI: Families Brave the Cold for a Winter Fun Day
Alaska Region, February 9, 2008

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge held an open house and winter fun day at their headquarters and environmental education classroom February 9th and had good attendance despite the sub-zero temperatures outside.  The 119 people participating had opportunities while indoors to engage in family-oriented activities and/or watch the movie "Stranger in the Woods", as well as venture outside to participate in a guided snowshoe hike.  Along with learning to identify common animal tracks in snow and survival adaptations used by some animals to survive bitter cold conditions, there were also games to help learn winter survival tips for humans, including choosing good outdoor clothing and identifying signs of frostbite and hypothermia.  Those who completed the Refuge's winter explorer program work sheet were awarded buttons.  Hot chocolate and sherbet made from snow were enjoyed by all.
