SHAWANGUNK REFUGE NWR PARTNERSHIP EXPANDS PRESCRIBED BURN POSSIBILITIES

Fire Zone Management Officer Mike Durfee along with Refuge Manager Edward Henry and Biologist Dan Stotts met with staff from The Nature Conservancy, The Mohonk Preserve, and New York State to discuss strategies for applying grant funds for prescribed burning at Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge. So far, this partnership has secured more than $180,000 in grants and matching funds for fire-related programs on the Shawangunk Ridge and for the Shawangunk Grasslands NWR. Projects discussed include breeding bird monitoring, joint media stratgies, burning more than 200 acres of grasslands and up to 100 acres of forest, invasive spcecies control, fuels management projects and habitat restoration.
