The Austin Ecological Services Office completed a biological opinion on January 11, 2008, that covers the Department of Defense(DoD) for effects to listed aquatic species of the Edwards Aquifer resulting from water withdrawal from wells on three military installations in San Antonio, Texas through 2012.  The installations are Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, and  Randoph Air Force Base.  Conservation recommendations in the biological opinion included expanding DoD participation in the Edwards Aquifer Recovery Implementation Program.  Previous support from DoD resulted in a new state-of-the-art computer model of the Edwards aquifer, which is being used and updated by the Edwards Aquifer Authority and others.
