Journal Entry   Back Restoration of Ponderosa Pine Ecosystem in Northern Arizona Southwest Region, January 28, 2008 Print Friendly Version Forest management activities to restore fire-adapted ponderosa pine ecosystems is a central priority of the US Forest Service Southwestern Region 3 in Northern Arizona.  Industry will play a key role in achieving this goal by reducing treatment costs while providing economic opportunities.  The manner in which treatments occur across the landscape, multiple jurisdictions and land management zones is of vital concern to a diversity of stakeholder groups, including the Fish and Wildlife Servce.  To identify a level of forest thinning treatments and potential wood supply from restoration byproducts, a 20-member working group of individuals representing environmental, non-governmental organizations, private forest industries, Northern Arizona University-Ecological Restoration Institute and state and federal agencies was assembled, which included representation from the Arizona Ecological Services Field Office. Working with Forest ERA, we developed up-to-date remote sensing-based forest structure data layers to estimate wood volume and inform landscape level treatement scenarios.  The Working Group successfully defined desired future conditions within five landscape management zones including those designed to protect communities, municipal and aquatic species watersheds, Mexican spotted owl habitat and wildlands.  Consensus was reached on the location and level of restoration treatments for 41% of the total landscape resulting 0.85 billion cubic feet of wood byproducts.  These results will be used to assist in the development of multi-year forest stewardship contracts to attract new industrial users and continue to supply wood fiber to existing local industries.
