The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Digs Vernal Pools for Herps
Northeast Region, January 9, 2008
Print Friendly Version
On Wednesday, January 9, 2008, New Jersey Field Office Biologist Brian Marsh of the Partners program dug five vernal pools and two turtle nesting pits at a site in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The site has clay-rich soils well-suited for allowing water to pond in vernal pools. The pools will support breeding populations of amphibians such as spotted salamander, Jefferson salamander (a State Species of Special Concern), and long-tailed salamander (State-threatened). Rotting logs and stone fences already found throughout the property will provide other habitat features needed by the amphibians. The turtle nesting pits will support breeding populations of eastern box turtle (State Species of Special Concern) and the wood turtle (State-threatened). Partners is also pursuing extensive multiflora rose management at the property in addition to other habitat enhancements such as nest boxes and meadow management.
