TETLIN: CANnes Film Festival Series Draws Tetlin Crowds
Alaska Region, January 17, 2008
Print Friendly Version

A total of 84 local residents gathered at Tok's famous "eatery" during the past 4 months and enjoyed films as diverse as Bill Nye to Dirty Jobs.  The Tetlin NWR, along with Fast Eddy's Restaurant, Duct Tape Radio, Humanities Forum, and the Helping Hands Food Bank sponsored a series of 3 nights of films for the community.  Admission to these films...1 can of food for the local Food Bank (hence the clever name, "CANnes" - for those of you who may not be aware, the Cannes Film Fest is a big annual festival in France.)  The final film evening featured popular films from the "2007 Far North Conservation Film Festival" held in Fairbanks in November.

Films included: Winged Migration, Rachel Carson, Bill Nye - Global Warming, 60 Minutes - Global Warning, An Inconvenient Truth, A World at Waste, Gates of the Arctic, Commute, Yukon Circles and the episode of "Dirty Jobs" which featured Yukon Delta NWR staff in Wild Goose Chase.

The second night of the series (held in mid-November) focused on global climate change.  Information on climate change was available and each participant received a free compact fluorescent light bulb.

These film nights were easy to organize and advertise and were responded to very well by the community.
