Law Enforcement Presence - A Necessity in Resource Protection
Northeast Region, December 22, 2007
Print Friendly Version
At the center of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s mandate to protect  land, water and wildlife, law enforcement plays a critical role.  The recent addition of a law enforcement officer to the Potomac River NWR Complex staff has greatly enhanced our ability to respond to resource issues.  Since joining the staff in 2006, Officer Gareth Williams has responded to nearly 200 incidents throughout the Complex.  One such incident occurred in December of 2007 at Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge.

Featherstone NWR is located in Woodbridge, VA and is currently closed to all public access due to safety concerns and lack of public access.  Officer Williams received a call from a local game warden working for the VA Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.  He was notified that local duck hunters in the area were hearing shots that seem to be coming from our property.  While responding to the call, Officer Williams apprehended two individuals who were illegally hunting on the refuge.  The trespassing hunters had shot and killed a deer on refuge property.

This is one of many incidents that the refuge law enforcement officer has had to address since joining the Potomac River NWR Complex team.   Prior to his arrival, the Complex had no one on staff able to respond to law enforcement issues.  His diligent work has paved the way for a safer environment that the public can enjoy.
