The Coconino Plateau Water Advisory Council (CPWAC) summarized it's progress in water management activities during 2007.  Arizona Ecological Service's Flagstaff Suboffice represents the FWS in this collaborative partnership and participates in several committees, as well as the council.  The goal of the partnership is to ensure an adequate long-term supply of water to meet current and future reasonable human needs while preserving the health of the environment on the Coconino Plateau.   Twenty-seven member agencies, organizations, and governments participate in the partnership.  

During 2007, the CPWAC continued planning towards a feasibility study for long-term water supply alternatives for the Plateau.  The main focus of the study will be analysis of alternative supply sources, including Colorado River water and ground water, to service various demand centers, including the Navajo and Hopi Tribes, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, and Williams.  In addition, the CPWAC began to implement a strategic plan to better understand and use existing water sources.  Actions completed this year included acquiring a grant from Arizona Water Institute to identify and prioritize for protection important water sources that may be at-risk from continued use and development of ground water; developing and launching a website (www.cpwac.org); coordinating with USGS on a hydrologic model for various water use scenarios; and cooperating to develop common messages for working with state and Federal legislators on legal and regulatory issues.
