MULTI-CULTURAL OUTREACH
Southwest Region, November 10, 2007

120 Chinese Americans from Houston, Texas arrived at the Santa Ana NWR on a tour bus and  as the Refuge tram tour bus could only accommodate 60 people, Corpus Christi ES staff volunteered to give the rest of the group a walking tour of the Refuge.  ES staff gave an introductory talk to 40-50 individuals about the Refuge system and the Rio Grande Valley with emphasis on habitat loss and species richness including birds, butterflies, plants and endangered species.  The group was given a two hour tour with wetlands, birds, observation towers, and the Rio Grande River as viewed from the Refuge trail system.  The guided tour led to a better understanding of the National Wildlife Refuge System and conservation efforts of the Service throughout the U.S.
