The annual fish monitoring for the federally listed Yaqui chub (Gila Purpurea), Yaqui topminnow (Poeciliopsis sonoriensis), Yaqui beautiful shiner (Cyprinella Formosa) and the Yaqui catfish (Ictalurus pricei), as well as other species of concern in the region, was completed in November.  There are fourteen wetlands that are surveyed each year, 13 that are on San Bernardino NWR and the creek that runs through Leslie Canyon NWR.  In addition to those fourteen sites, Black Draw on San Bernardino NWR is electro-shocked to measure for density of fish in stream sections.  The occupancy rates of all species are up from last year for both of the refuges, San Bernardino NWR and Leslie canyon NWR.   The occupancy rate for Yaqui chub is .35185 or 35.19% of habitat occupied in 2007 where in 2006 it was .33448 or 33.45% habitat occupied.  The Yaqui topminnow occupancy rate for 2007 is .76128 of 76.13%, in 2006 the rate was .61559 or 61.56%.  Thirty three Yaqui catfish were captured this year with twenty two of those being recaptures.  Several of these recaptures were catfish that were released in the original stocking effort in 1997.  Fish density in Black Draw was also up from 2006.  Longfin dace and Yaqui topminnow are the chief inhabitants of this lentic habitat, with a few Yaqui chub and Mexican stoneroller (Campostoma ornatum) being found.  Density of fish per meter of stream length of longfin dace in Black Draw was 1.508 and Yaqui topminnow density was 1.897.  Of other note, 11 Mexican stonerollers were captured during the electro-shocking of Black Draw.  This is up from 2006.  Two age classes were found for the stoneroller, leading refuge personnel to believe that these fish may be breeding on the refuge.
