Oil Spill Response on the Deep Fork NWR
Southwest Region, November 1, 2007
Print Friendly Version
On October 27, 2007 the Deep Fork NWR staff in Okmulgee OK, found an oil spill on the Deep Fork NWR.  An oil lease operator hit a pipeline while removing brush from an access road, discharging an undetermined amount of oil.  The oil migrated into a small wetland/backwater area in the floodplain of the Deep Fork River. The oil covered the surface of the water creating a hazard to migratory birds. The Deep Fork NWR Law Enforcement officer reported the spill to the National Response Center and coordinated with the Oklahoma ES contaminants staff. The EPA sent their START contractor and an On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) to the site and hired an oil spill removal contractor to clean up the spill.

On November 1, 2007, the Oklahoma ES contaminants staff visited the site to view the clean up activities. The clean up was sufficient to protect migratory birds. However, the Responsible Party was requested to place absorbent and hard booms downstream of the spill to catch any future oil sheen from the site to protect the Deep Fork River. This recommendation was supported by the EPA OSC.

In addition to the spill response, EPA performed a Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) inspection on the entire lease. The lease holder will be required to increase protective measures to avoid future oil spills.
