KENAI: New Plant Species Named for Refuge Ecologist

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Ecologist Dr. Edward Berg, was honored by the naming of a new species of moss discovered recently on the Kenai Peninsula in his name.  Sphagnum bergianum was identified by Dick Andrus from Binghamton University in New York.  Another new species was also identified during the taxonomic work in the area and was named Sphagnum kenaiense.  The work was published in Sida 22(2).  Sphagnum mosses grow in wet soils throughout much of Alaska.  Dr. Berg has worked at the Refuge for many years and is well known for his support of scientific research and his numerous publications in the fields of botany, ecology, and geology.
