Print Friendly Version

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) held a briefing on the 2007 Inland Consent Decree on October 25, in Gaylord, Michigan.

The 2007 Inland Consent Decree is an agreement between the MDNR and five Indian Tribes involved in the 1836 Inland Treaty Rights.

The Indian Tribes include:  the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the Bay Mills Indian Community, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, and the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians.

The agreement covers 13,837,207 acres of land and inland water within the 1836 Treaty boundaries, which is located in Northwest 1/3rd of the Lower Peninsula and Eastern half of the Upper Peninsula.

In the 1836 Treaty area, the MDNR and Indian Tribes will coordinate their research and assessment activities, coordinate restoration, reclamation and enhancement projects and discuss and exchange information.

Rick Westerhof from the Green Bay National Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office attended the meeting, along with approximately 100 other people.

The MDNR gave a great overview of the agreement and answered numerous questions from the audience.
