Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge Helps Teach Youths How to Fly Fish
Northeast Region, August 11, 2007
Print Friendly Version

On Saturday, August 11, 2007 Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge and Kittery Trading Post located in Kittery, Maine hosted a free "learn to fly fish" class for kids between the ages of 8 and 15. The class took place at Kittery Trading Post (KTP), beginning inside the store where refuge intern Michael Nadeau gave a brief introduction to the National Wildlife Refuge System, Rachel Carson, the Rachel Carson NWR, and salt marsh/fish ecology. After Nadeau's presentation, KTP employee Derek Sturtevant gave a brief presentation outlining the basics of fly fishing equipment, theory and fundamentals. Participants then moved outside to the front lawn of KTP where they learned and practiced the rudiments of proper fly casting. Derek and Michael led the fly casting instruction portion of the event which lasted approximately an hour and fifteen minutes.

With all 15 slots filled at this popular event, an additional 10 child/parent pairs were put on a waiting list. All 15 participants also went home with a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service goodie bag which contained information on the NWR system, Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, safe lead-free fishing practices, and a pamphlet detailing the nine fishing access sites on the Rachel Carson NWR. All goodie bags also contained a complimentary fly, paid for through the Service's Challenge Cost Share Grant Program. Event coordinators were Justin Kane from Kittery Trading Post and Karrie Schwaab from Rachel Carson NWR. Justin and Karrie were present at the event and were available to answer questions from parents.

The following Saturday, August 18, 2007, class participants were invited to travel to the refuge in Wells, Maine for an insider's orientation on the best Rachel Carson NWR fishing spots. Participants met at the refuge headquarters and traveled a short distance to the Mousam River in Kennebunk, Maine where they had the opportunity to examine one of the refuge's more popular fishing sites; and test their new fly fishing skills under the supervision of refuge interns.
