Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge received a $100,000 grant from the Department of Transportation to study the traffic congestion at the refuge headquarters and the surrounding town of Chatham.  The refuge staff and Town officials are working together to address alternatives which will ease the seasonal traffic pressures.  The staff is hoping that a spur can be developed off of the successful flex bus system which the Cape Cod National Seashore has already developed.

The town of Chatham has long and beautiful beaches, most of the homes are historic, the harbors are picturesque, the streets are narrow and winding and there is little public parking.  Monomoy is at the elbow of the Cape and visitors must travel through the town to get to the refuge.

The town is very quaint, but during the summer months the narrow roads are clogged with visitors trying to get onto the federal lands.  Refuge staff hope that by receiving this grant they can be proactive and assist the Town of Chatham with the current parking situation.
