The Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge was recently honored at a memorial potlatch for the late Teddy Northway Sr.   Refuge staff were invited by wife and respected elder Darlene Northway, a seasonal Park Ranger at the Tetlin NWR Visitor Center since 1994. Seven Tetlin employees joined 450 people at the two evening event at the Northway Community Hall. Both nights involved dinner, singing, dancing and speeches. The potlatch culminated with the Northway family giving gifts to guests.

In her 13 years working for Tetlin Refuge, Darlene Northway has passed on the traditions of her Athabascan culture to the next generation and forged an improved  relationship between the Village of Northway and Tetlin Refuge. On Friday evening, Darlene’s daughter recognized Tetlin staff for their support to her mother during her recovery from an extended illness. A Tetlin staff member was asked to make a short speech about Darlene and her work. Each staff member in turn received a traditional handmade gift (e.g., beaded gloves, slippers, or mukluks) as a sign of the respect and recognition accorded the Refuge at this significant cultural event.
