It's A Wrap...2007 Spawning-Phase Sea Lamprey Assessment Complete
Midwest Region, August 10, 2007
Print Friendly Version

The Marquette Biological Station conducts an assessment of adult spawning-phase sea lamprey populations to determine the long-term effectiveness of control actions throughout the Great Lakes.  During 2007, assessment traps were placed in 54 tributaries of lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario.  There were 72,500 adult sea lampreys captured (Lake Superior – 7,800; Lake Michigan – 39,100; Lake Huron – 24,300; Lake Erie – 200; Lake Ontario – 1,100).

The sea lamprey management program continues to work closely with partners to control populations of sea lampreys in tributaries of the Great Lakes to protect the fishery and related economic activities in the basin (an estimated annual benefit of $4-6 billion/year to the region).  The Service delivers a program of integrated sea lamprey control in the U.S. waters of the Great Lakes as a contract agent of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.
