Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge hosted the 37^th Annual Bison Auction on October 25, 2007.  This year was a special year as the Refuge, its partners, and the local communities celebrated the 100^th anniversary of the reintroduction of bison to the Refuge and dedicated the expansion of the Wichita Mountains State Scenic Byway.  The festivities began at around 9:30 a.m. with the Comanche Buffalo Dance preformed by members of the Horn Society.  At 10:30 a.m., Dr. David Byland brought President Theodore Roosevelt back to the Refuge with his one-man show called “Delighted”.  The United States Postal Service held a stamp cancellation station commemorating the event.  Other booths were provided by the Oklahoma Trail System, Association of the Friends of the Wichitas, and Refuge staff with a bison management interpretive display and a skins and skulls interpretive display.  The Fort Sill Buffalo Soldiers presented the Colors while Alicia Richey and Madison Ward (8^th Graders from Cache, OK Middle School) sang the National Anthem.  Refuge Manager Jeff Rupert welcomed the visitors to the celebration.  Richard Andrews from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation spoke of the partnership between the Refuge and the State Scenic Byway organization.  Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Jari Askins provided words of wisdom to visitors and, in particular students, about their responsibility to preserve natural resources for future generations.  The Lawton/Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce sold a longhorn burger plate lunch to visitors and the Association of the Friends of the Wichitas sold beverages during the day’s activities. Approximately 1400 visitors participated in the activities at this year’s bison auction and celebration.
