Renewed planning effort for the New Mexico Consumptive Use and Forebearance Agreement (CUFA; a part of the Arizona Water Settlements Act)
Southwest Region, October 26, 2007
Print Friendly Version

The State of New Mexico is renewing its planning efforts under the CUFA, which allows for expenditures of between $66M - $128M to develop water supply projects that could include the diversion of up to 14,000 acre-feet of water from the upper Gila River. FWS staff from the Arizona and New Mexico Ecological Service Field Offices have responded to an invitation from the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission to participate in the early planning effort in advance of the preparation of a Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act Report and, subsequently, a biological opinion. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is already participating in the planning process, and contact has been made with the Arizona Game and Fish Department in order to gain their participation as well.

It should be noted that FWS staff were closely involved in a prior iteration of said planning effort, with participation concluding when a gubernatorial veto halted New Mexico's funding for the project.
