The Environmental Education Program at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge is enjoying a second successful year.  According to Jean Charles, education coordinator of the course for the Friends of Prime Hook NWR, nearly 200 second graders from both Cape Henlopen and Milford School Districts have enthusiastically participated in this endeavor, well on the road to becoming young entomologists.

Using the framework of the State of Delaware science curriculum standards, the insect program encourages students to become scientists in several habitats including a creek, open field, and forest.  As real life scientists do, they then participate in a discussion that allows them to record their observations and compare and contrast various insects using field guides.

About 20 volunteers, most of whom are retired school teachers, are working with Ms. Charles, the Friends' Board, and refuge staff to carry out the program.  They have developed a detailed course guide and also a student activity guide in conjunction with the science departments of local schools.
