Youth Leaders Challenged to Become Better Stewards of the Environment
Northeast Region, October 4, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Kofi Fynn-Aikins, project leader at the Lower Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office, gave a presentation to 40 high school students enrolled in Youth Leadership Erie County (YLEC) on October 4, 2007. The title of Kofi's presentation was, "History of Industrialization in the Buffalo/Niagara Region: Effect on the Community and the Environment."  Kofi's presentation delved into the history of Buffalo, how the city rose to prominence and became very successful and wealthy during the industrial revolution.  He also described the lingering legacy of environmental pollution and how it continues to negatively affect not only fish, wildlife and their habitats, but also the health of the citizens of the Buffalo Niagara Region.  Kofi challenged the students to become better stewards of the environment, and work with environmental organizations to conserve fish and wildlife and their habitats.

YLEC is a 9-month leadership enrichment program, one of Leadership Buffalo programs that connects high school sophomores and juniors from throughout Erie County.  The goal is to build a foundation of leadership skills, an awareness of community issues, appreciation for diversity, and a commitment to lifelong involvement in community service. Leadership Buffalo is a values based organization committed to developing the current and future leaders of Buffalo and Erie County by instilling four core values: Service, Diversity, Inclusion and Openness to Change. Kofi is a 2006 graduate of Leadership Buffalo's Class Experience program.
