Aroostook and Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuges Assist USDA Wildlife Services and Maine in Surveillance for Avian Influenza Among Waterfowl
Northeast Region, September 30, 2007
Print Friendly Version

Aroostook and Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge staff, cooperators, and volunteers aided the USDA Wildlife Services and Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in surveillance for avian influenza (AI) among free-ranging waterfowl during August and September 2007.  Through our annual preseason waterfowl banding programs, the refuges obtained samples from 199 ducks, including American black ducks (158), mallards (21), and wood ducks (20) to help Wildlife Services and Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife reach sampling goals for these species.  The ducks were sampled over a two-month period across eight towns in Washington and Aroostook Counties in eastern and northern Maine.  USDA Wildlife Services trained refuge staff, volunteers and cooperators in sampling protocols for avian influenza, and provided sampling kits and shipping containers for the specimens.
