Wise Point Boat Ramp Grand Opening
Northeast Region, October 5, 2007
Print Friendly Version

On October 5, 2007 the Wise Point Boat Ramp opened to the general public.  The opening was celebrated with a ribbon cutting event, enjoyed by nearly 100 visitors, federal, state and local elected officials, retired employees and friends of the refuge.

The new facility has twin 16-foot boat ramps with a floating courtesy pier, a 248-foot long commercial timber dock, a restroom, a 100-foot concrete low water crossing and improvements to the entrance road and previous parking area (with 76 parking spaces).

The improvements cost $1.3 million and funding was garnered through Federal Highways Refuge Roads program (entrance road and parking lot) and additional monies were secured through MMS (boat ramp and dock).

The opening of this facility fulfills a promise the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had with the local community to keep the boat ramp open if we were to ever acquire the property on which the boat ramp was located.  The Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge purchased this property on December 26, 2001.  Additionally, this facility assists the County in maintaining its rural character, in that commercial and recreational fisheries provide a substantial amount of revenue to the local economy.
