Refuge Week a Major Success at Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge
Midwest Region, October 15, 2007
Print Friendly Version

In celebration of National Wildlife Refuge Week, Humbug Marsh held a public open house on Sat., Oct. 13th for self-guided tours.  Over 100 people attended.

Also held on Oct. 13th was a 35th anniversary celebration of the Clean Water Act and U.S.-Canada Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, first signed in 1972.  This celebration, organized by U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, took place at Meyer Ellias Park in Trenton, Michigan.

Congressman John Dingell, Canadian Member of Parliament Jeff Watson, Canadian Consul General Robert Noble, other dignitaries, and high school students from the area participated.  During the event, high school students released over 100 lake whitefish into the river celebrating the recent cleanup of Ellias Cove that is now clean enough to support lake whitefish.

Also, held on Sunday, Oct. 14th was the "Big Sit" where over 60 volunteers counted 62 different species of birds in Humbug Marsh Unit over a 24-hour period.  One important observation was a Rusty Blackbird, a new record for Humbug Marsh Unit.

Finally, a local boy scout troop worked on Oct. 13th to mark dead ash trees in Humbug Marsh for removal in preparation for constructing a regional greenway trail.
