Archery was one of the many events held at Wallkill River NWR's Refuge Day.
Archery was one of the many events held at Wallkill River NWR's Refuge Day.

On October 7, staff and volunteers at Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge teamed up with the Friends of Wallkill River to celebrate refuge week. The Refuge Day event was a huge success and attended by 500 people.  The live frog jumping contest and archery practice really hit the mark! A local band provided live music for entertainment. Avid birder and refuge volunteer, Ken Witkowski, led guided field walks.   In addition, refuge volunteer Giselle Smitko of Avian Wildlife released two rehabilitated red-tailed hawks.   The day also included search and rescue demonstrations and a reptile program attended by 45 people. The event  focused on connecting children and nature; a good time was had by all!
