Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office Awarded Top Honors for Display at America’s Fair
Northeast Region, August 19, 2007
Print Friendly Version
The Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office was awarded top honors for their participation in this year's America's Fair.  The fair was held in Hamburg, NY August 8- 19, 2007.  As one of the largest county fairs in the nation, this event is an opportunity for the fishery office to raise awareness about emerging environmental issues in the lower Great Lakes region.

Fishery office employees staffed an exhibit in the Conservation Building.  Staff stepped up to the challenge of creating a display that met all the criteria for competitive exhibits, including theme participation.  The theme of this year's fair was "Keeping the Dream Alive".  The display featured a timeline highlighting important dates and events that changed the landscape of the Great Lakes and a three-poster series entitled Keeping Their Dream Alive (featuring conservation heroes such as Rachel Carson, Aldo Leopold, Theodore Roosevelt, and "Ding" Darling), Keeping Our Dream Alive (featuring information about the role of the LGLFRO), and finally Keeping Fish and Wildlife Alive (featuring current conservation programs and efforts).

Approximately 14,695 people viewed the display.  A tank of live, native fish captured the attention of both children and adults, fostering "fishing stories" of days gone by.    The fishery office display was awarded First Place in the Theme Participation Competition.
