Print Friendly Version
On September 4, 2007, local politicians, federal agency administrators and natural resource conservation leaders celebrated the transfer of 102 acres of land from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) with a media event.  The property will be managed as part of the Sayville Unit of Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge, Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex.  The property protects some of the last remaining grasslands unique to the area and the wildlife and plants that depend on them.

U.S. Congressman Steve J. Israel, FAA Administrator Manny Weiss, the Service's Northeast Region Chief of Realty Walt Quist, Refuge Manager Debbie Long, Friends of Wertheim President Claire Goad, Refuge Biologist Alex Chmielewski and The Nature Conservancy's Dr. Marilyn Jordan spoke at the event and provided photo opportunities for various media including Cable News Channel 57, WCBS Radio, Suffolk County News, Long Islander Public Radio and Long Island's Channel 12.
