The South Texas Sea Turtle Project, a cooperative conservation project to locate and protect nesting Kemp's ridley and other sea turtles and their nests on South Padre Island and Boca Chica Beaches in southernmost Texas, concluded in August.  Four of the last five sea turtle nests found this season hatched in August, resulting in 352 hatchlings successfully released (252 Kemp's ridley hatchlings, 100 loggerhead hatchlings).  One sea turtle nest did not hatch and was found to be infertile.  Two sea turtle hatchling releases in August were open to the public and approximately 550 visitors attended.  Nine adult nesting females, all Kemp's ridley, were documented through the project this year.  Eight of the females had no previous tags and one female had been tagged nesting on South Padre Island in 2005.  A total of 22 sea turtle nests, including 20 Kemp's ridley (17 on South Padre Island, three on Boca Chica) and two loggerhead nests (on South Padre Island), were located and protected.  These nests contained a total of 2,203 eggs (1,987 Kemp's ridley, 216 loggerhead) and resulted in 1,846 hatchlings (1,653 Kemp's ridley, 193 loggerhead).  Overall emergence success was 83.79%.
