Kirtland's Warbler Population Reaches New Records: A Recap of the 2007 Nesting Season
Midwest Region, September 1, 2007
Print Friendly Version

The 2007 Kirtland’s warbler signing male census counted 1,707 singing males, including 8 males counted in Wisconsin and 2 males in Ontario, Canada.  This is the highest count in history and the fifth consecutive annual record count.  Furthermore, three nests were discovered in central Wisconsin.  This marks the first time that a Kirtland's warbler has nested outside of Michigan since nesting occurred in Ontario, Canada in the 1940's

Kirtland’s warbler recovery is dependent on annual intensive habitat management and annual brown-headed cowbird control.  These vital interagency actions alleviate the twin threats of nesting habitat loss and nest parasitism.

Guided tours, conducted annually by the US Forest Service and US Fish and Wildlife Service, with assistance from the Michigan Audubon Society, provided the public an opportunity to see Kirtland’s warblers.  The 2007 tours were attended by 1,100 people from 38 states, the District of Columbia, and eight foreign countries.

The success of the Kirtland’s warbler recovery program is credited to the strong partnerships between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture – Wildlife Services, Michigan Departments of Natural Resources and Military and Veterans Affairs, The Nature Conservancy, The Bahamian National Trust, Michigan Audubon Society, and others.
