Banner Year For The Birds
Southwest Region, September 11, 2007
Print Friendly Version

The 2007 breeding season was a banner year for the birds on the Bill Williams River NWR.  To date there were three successful southwestern willow flycatcher nests but the final report on number of fledglings and numbers banded have not been received.  Most notable were yellow-billed cuckoo numbers.  Surveys from the southern Nevada Refuges to the Mexican border totalled 122 yellow-billed cuckoo detections. The Bill Williams River NWR accounted for 115 of the 122 detections.  Cuckoo detections were more widespread over the refuge than past years due to new habitat created from the properly timed flood water releases from Alamo Reservoir in 2004-2005.

The flood release schedule is the result of an on-going partnership (Bill Williams River Corridor Steering Committee) between Federal, State, NGO and private entities to maximize fisheries in Alamo Reservoir, public use on Alamo State Park and enhance riparian habitat upstream and downstream of Alamo Reservoir.
