Repatriation and Reburial of Native American Remains at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, June 18, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge Manager Ward Fuert repatriated the remains of an ancient Native American found eroding in salt marsh on the refuge to the Wabnaki Repatriation Committee June 18, 2007.  Federal Agencies are required to repatriate Native American human remains to affiliated Tribes when the affiliation can be established. The repatriation culminated a year of regional cultural resources staff research and consultation with five federally recognized Tribes. The Maine Tribes (Penobscot Indian Nation, Passamaquoddy Tribe, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians and Aroostook Band of Micmacs) have formed a joint Repatriation Committee, and the committee chose to rebury the remains at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Donna Augustine, a representative of the committee, ceremonially reburied the remains on the refuge.
