Journal Entry   Back Pilot Diesel Spill Restoration FundsReleased Southwest Region, June 6, 2007 Print Friendly Version On June 6, 2007, Region 2 Acting Regional Director requested that restoration funds be released from the Natural Resource Damage and Restoration Fund account to complete restoration activities associated with the December 8, 2000 diesel spill on the Bill Williams River NWR.  The spill which occurred on December 8, 2000, involved approximately 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel on uplands adjacent to the Bill Williams River and delta.  The area is home to the endangered Yuma clapper rail and two endangered fish as well as numerous species of marsh and water birds.  Cleanup activities continued for a 40 day period at the cost of $5M.  Settlement negotiations lasted almost four years.  The restoration funds will be used to restore 20 acres of abandoned croplands on the refuge which had been farmed by the previous owner.  The 100 acre area consists of a large alluvial fan which historically contained palo verde, ironwood and mesquite habitat.  Restoration plans are to replace and duplicate the historic habitat composition of the area.  This same area will also be used as a compensatory restoration site for the July 28, 2006 diesel spill and resulting fire that destroyed about 100 acres of riparian and upland habitat.  NRDAR funds totaling $155,000 were released in September, 2007.
