Kid’s Fishing Derby at Crab Orchard NWR
Midwest Region, July 30, 2007
Print Friendly Version
The annual Kid’s Fishing Derby at Crab Orchard NWR is always a big hit, but we want to make it even bigger.  It has recently been moved to a more visible area with great access for bank fishing.  Unfortunately, the fish habitat and thus the fishing in this area is poorer in this area than much of the rest of Crab Orchard Lake.  In an effort to improve fishing, Fishery Biologist Mike Stahl (Carterville FRO), with assistance from Chris Bickers (Illinois DNR) and Project Leader Rob Simmonds (Carterville FRO), generated and explored a number of potential options.

With ideas and information in hand, these folks, along with Fishery Biologist Nate Caswell (Carterville FRO), sat down with several Crab Orchard NWR staff to discuss the feasibility of the various options.  This fruitful interaction identified some issues (e.g., an old paved road bed running through the middle of a site considered for dredging) as well as some opportunities (e.g., using dredge material to enhance and increase bank fishing along an area that is currently too shallow and difficult to access).  Several folks left the meeting with homework assignments which will help us to gather additional information on cost and feasibility.  If all goes well, we will deepen some areas, add rock to provide habitat and contain loose soil to increase fishing in some areas, install brush piles or other fish attractors, and collectively make this a great year round bank fishing area.
