Members of the Illinois Audubon Society’s Great Rivers Chapter are working with Two Rivers Refuge staff to develop a demonstration plot of prairie wildflowers. Its purpose is to illustrate the beauty of tallgrass prairie, which once dominated the area. Those vast seas of waving grass also contained hundreds of different wildflowers that bloomed throughout the growing season.

In a partnership arrangement, refuge staff prepared the ½-acre planting site while the Audubon members planted over 40 different prairie flower species. Much weeding and watering has been required to get these plants through the hot summer months. The project’s location near the Two Rivers headquarters in Calhoun County, IL, makes it convenient for visitors. Special information signs and a brochure are planned to educate visitors about prairies in the Midwest.
