Great Lakes Bat Festival a Great Success
Midwest Region, August 11, 2007
Print Friendly Version
The 6th annual Great Lakes Bat Festival was held at the Indiana State University Center for North American Bat Research and Conservation, August 11.  This family event was attended by more than 1,000 people and featured talks and demonstrations – including several with live bats, bat books (with some authors available for signings and readings), an inflatable cave to explore (complete with an informative cave man), a showing of the new film Caves: Life Beneath the Forest, and lots of activities for kids.  The day concluded with a barbecue followed by a demonstration of bat mist netting, radio tagging, light tagging, and echolocation.

The Service’s Bloomington Field Office, Indiana, had a booth at the event and biologist Lori Pruitt and volunteer Morgan Pruitt were on hand to answer questions about bats, and Service programs in general.  Interest in the Service booth was high – we lured people in by giving away cool bat whistles – and gave us the opportunity to do a lot of bat outreach.
