Journal Entry   Back TexmoDiesel Spill Settlement Reached Southwest Region, July 31, 2007 Print Friendly Version On July 28, 2006 a diesel tanker carrying approimately 7800 gallons of diesel fuel failed to negotiate a curve entering the Bill Williams River bridge.  The rollover caused a fire on the bridge and burning diesel fuel ignited the cattail marsh beneath the bridge.  The fire moved upstream and consumed approx. 120 acres of cottonwood/willow, desert wash and upland habitat as well as 230 acres of cattail marsh.  Fire suppression activities included 90 personnel, two fixed wing aircraft and one helicopter over a two week period.  Restoration planning by the refuge staff included a Habitat Equivalency Anaylsis (HEA) to cover the time period that wildlife losses would be incurred until replaced habitat had matured to pre-fire conditions and to cover losses to mature cactus (saguaro and barrel cactus) and palo verde; upland habitat that cannot be replaced.  The HEA resulted in a proposed compensatory mitigation acreage for those losses.  The refuge staff was able to clearly articulate wildlife losses due to ten years of monitoring data covering all refuge habitat types.  Settlement with the Texmo Oil Co. was $1.217M.
