Fourteenth Building Removed from Whittlesey Creek NWR
Midwest Region, July 26, 2007
Print Friendly Version
A new method was used by the staff at the Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge to remove an old hunting shack located on a recently acquired parcel.  The staff removed all metal, old furniture, garbage and glass, and left the wood to rot in the damp environment.  To facilitate the rotting process, the walls were cut apart and safely pulled to the ground.  The shack was located near the shore of Lake Superior, with no access except by water.  It was likely used by previous owners during the waterfowl hunting season.

The Refuge’s Youth Conservation Corp assisted with the clean-up and demolition.  Biologist Mike Mlynarek supervised the project. All other staff joined for a day to help remove and haul material and old furniture.

The Whittlesey Creek Refuge has acquired 13 parcels within its boundary in the last 8 years; seven have had buildings that required removal.  Refuge staff have used several methods to remove buildings, including burning them, demolishing and landfilling them, and selling them to the highest bidder for removal and use elsewhere.  Only one building has been retained by the Refuge staff – a large pole building for storage.
