New signs at the confluence of the Kenai and Russian Rivers help anglers understand the importance of riverbank protection.

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, along with a long list of partners that include federal, state, and local agencies, non-profit groups, and contractors, recently completed habitat work along the Upper Kenai River.  The project took two years and resulted in new protection and 1700 feet of riverbank rehabilitation at the confluence of the Kenai and Russian Rivers, one of Alaska's most heavily used areas by salmon anglers.  The project included revegetation, protection structures (stairways and fencing), and educational displays.  Signs focused on helping visitors understand the importance to the future of salmon and salmon fishing by minimally impacting the banks and undertaking good fishing behavior.  Funding for the work was provided through the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Program.
