House Rock Northern Leopard Frog Releases

On July 11, 2007, Shaula Hedwall (Arizona Ecological Services Office) and Susie MacVean [Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD)] released 262 late stage northern leopard frog tadpoles and four metamorphs at three troughs on the AGFD House Rock Wildlife Area, Coconino County, Arizona.  The tadpoles were raised from a single eggmass collected in April from a canyon on Lake Powell, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Utah.  Although the two biologists had intended to collect additional eggmasses for rearing, heavy flooding and scouring in the fall of 2006 greatly altered frog breeding habitat in these canyons, and only one eggmass was collected.

This is the second year of northern leopard frog releases in House Rock Valley.  FWS and AGFD conducted surveys in spring 2007 at four sites where tadpoles were released in 2006.  Frogs were present in at least three of the sites, and there was evidence of reproduction at one of the tanks.   Future plans are to survey for additional reintroduction sites on the Kaibab and Paria Plateaus this fall, collect additional egg masses from Lake Powell in the spring for rearing in captivity, and prepare documents needed for releases on Forest Service and BLM lands.

The Forest Service's Rocky Mountain Research Station in Flagstaff, Arizona, provided the facility for rearing the eggmasses.
