Carp Trap at Horicon NWR Nets 2,850 Carp
Midwest Region, June 7, 2007
Print Friendly Version

Horicon National Wildlife Refuge employees and volunteers cleaned out the carp trap on four different dates in 2007.

The first clean-out, April 30, resulted in 750 carp.  Carp ranged in size from 14.5 inches (a pound) to 19 inches (3.5 pounds).

The trap was also cleaned out on May 3 (900 carp), May 9 (500 carp), and June 7 (700 carp).

Other fish caught in the trap included northern pike, bluegill, white sucker, small mouth bass, and walleye.  Game fish were returned to the river.

All the carp were hauled to a local neighbor who uses the carp for fertilizer in his garden.  The demand for the fish is low, so the Refuge has been fortunate to find someone over the years who wants the fish.

Volunteers are an integral part of cleaning out the trap.  Twelve individual volunteers and a Waupun high school class assisted Refuge employees with seining the trap.
