Biologist Mary Henson assisted in the 2007 Summer Leadership Camp sponsored by Northern Michigan University Multicultural Education and Resource Center.

On June 25th, 60 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders and camp counselors converged on the Marquette Biological Station.  Kasia Mullett, station supervisor, greeted the campers then Henson spoke to them about careers in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the educational requirements necessary.

According to Shirley Brozzo, associate director of MERC, the purpose of the week-long Leadership Camp was to encouraged students to stay in school and eventually attend college by demonstrating the opportunities available in a variety of career fields.

Technician Gregg Baldwin, discussed the importance of several aquatic insects native to the Marquette area and entertained students with stories of his bird-banding adventures.  Biologist, Lisa Corradin, described the intricacies of differentiating between sea lamprey larvae and native lamprey larvae and technician, Sara Ruiter, showed students the Shop area and explained the need for employees to have other skills in addition to biological training.

The highlight of the day for most of the campers was having a sea lamprey attached to their hands.  The Service delivers a program of integrated sea lamprey control in the U.S. waters of the Great Lakes as a contracted agent of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.
