Journal Entry   Back Bonita Creek Native Fish Project Biological Opinion Completed Southwest Region, June 28, 2007 Print Friendly Version The biological opinion for the Bonita Creek Native Fish Project, an important native fish recovery effort involving Federal (Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), state (Arizona Game and Fish Department), and local (the City of Safford, Arizona) partners, has been completed.  Bonita Creek is home to 5 native fish species, including the endangered Gila chub (Gila intermedia). It’s also an important recreation area, the Bureau of Land Management’s Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, and is the primary source of drinking water for the City of Safford and nearby communities.  The Bonita Creek Native Fish Project will include a Bureau of Reclamation concrete fish barrier to protect this important habitat from the invasion of nonnative piscivorous fish, the reestablishment of 4 listed native fish species (desert pupfish, Gila topminnow, loach minnow, and spikedace), the continued maintenance of the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area for recreation and livestock grazing, and the improvement of existing water-supply infrastructure for the City of Safford.  This important effort is a good example of utilizing partnerships to achieve success in conservation.
