Journal Entry   Back Captive Propagation Underway for Spikedace and Loach Minnow Southwest Region, June 27, 2007 Print Friendly Version On July 24 -25, 2007, biologists from Western New Mexico University, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and the Arizona Ecological Services Office of the Fish and Wildlife Service collected spikedace and loach minnow from the Bird Area along the middle Gila River.  Approximately 400 spikedace and 130 loach minnow were transported by the Arizona Game and Fish Department back to the Bubbling Ponds Fish Hatchery, run by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, near Page Springs, Arizona.  At the same time, Dr. Paul Marsh, with Arizona State University, collected approximately 70 loach minnow from the Blue River, which were also transported to Bubbling Ponds.  These fish will be used to begin the captive propagation effort funded through the Central Arizona Project fund transfer program.  Progeny will be used in reintroduction and augmentation efforts that have been identified as critical steps towards recovery of these two species.
