Moosehorn National Wildlife RefugeAssists States of Maine and West Virginia with Habitat Management
Northeast Region, June 20, 2007
Print Friendly Version

In June 2007 Moosehorn biologist Andy Weik assisted West Virginia Department of Natural Resources biologist Shawn Head of the Elkins office in developing a Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program plan to regenerate shrub and forest habitat for high priority migratory birds on a parcel of private land in Canaan Valley, West Virginia.  Weik drafted silvicultural prescriptions and mapped the long term harvest plan to regenerate aspen, alders and other shrubs on approximately 130 acres.  Successful implementation of the management plan will ensure habitat for migratory and resident birds that use shrub and early successional forest, and will support West Virginia's state wildlife action plan.

Later in June, Weik joined Gary Donovan of the Wildlife Management Institute and Jim Hall of Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to consult on forest habitat management on Morong Point Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in coastal Washington County.  A portion of the WMA was selected to be developed into a habitat management demonstration area in support of the Service's Northeast Region's Northern Forest Woodcock Initiative and Maine's state wildlife action plan.
