During the week of June 25, 2007 Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge hosted its first Children in the Woods Day Camp. The day camp was conducted in order to rejuvenate the connection that has been lost between children and nature.  In an effort to restore this connection, refuge staff and volunteers coordinated daily events that focused on the six priority uses of the National Wildlife Refuge System. With the use of a random lottery system, twelve local children were selected for the camp and, over the next week, spent more than twenty hours immersed in nature. Campers had the opportunity to participate in archery, surf-fishing, crabbing, clamming, wildlife observation, and wildlife photography. Digital cameras were provided for individual use throughout the week so campers could capture special wildlife experiences and share with others. The day camp would not have been possible without the support and sponsorship of the Chincoteague Natural History Association.
