Drug Smuggling Thwarted on San Bernardino NWR
Southwest Region, June 15, 2007
Print Friendly Version

San Bernardino NWR Refuge Law Enforcement officers were able to halt the use of the refuge as a safe passage for drug smugglers coming from Mexico.  Over the course of the last three months drug smugglers have been trying to cross the San Bernardino NWR to avoid U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs.   After a couple of successful attempts at using the refuge for safe passage, Refuge Law Enforcement was able to get a handle on the situation and deterred several attempts.  Currently there has been no drug activity on the refuge, but the refuge’s LEO did stop a group of undocumented aliens that had crossed the refuge earlier this month.  While only a couple of arrests were made, the rest of the group fled back to Mexico, the active law enforcement presence on the refuge has prevented the refuge from becoming a highway for illegal immigration.
